A great way to pay – ‘Square’

Jack Dorsey (he who invented Twitter) was in Dublin recently for the Web Summit and he also appeared on The Late Late Show along with some fellow web professionals. On The Late Late Show, he talked to Ryan Tubridy about a fantastic little device that, as a tradesman, I feel is incredibly useful. The Square (https://squareup.com ) is a small scanner that you plug into your iPhone, iPad or Android Phone and allows one person to pay another person using a credit or debit card.

We are all so used to relying on plastic these days that very few people have cash on them, or even own a chequebook. Yet on occasions such as paying a babysitter, market trader or carpenter such as myself, customers want the convenience of paying without having to trek to the bank for cash – and from a security point of view it leaves a permanent record of the transaction. This little device simply reads the credit card and transfers from the card into the recipients bank account. An electronic receipt is then sent as proof of the transaction.

This is a great idea and I know that I have held off on using Paypal or other card processing payment devices because of the charges – with the Square there are none. I will certainly be getting one and my research tells me that my customers would welcome the option of paying me in this way and then they can of course spread their repayments over a few months if necessary. Its so simple I wish I’d thought of it myself! Hope Jack Dorsey keeps on inventing things like this offer really simple solutions to everyday problems!

Love your quirky furniture? Check out Dublin Design Week..

Its Dublin Design week at the moment (http://www.designweek.ie/ ) and for anyone interested in how you can turn your home or place of work into an environment which is quirky, stylish and gives your friends a touch of the green eyed monster, there are some fantastic displays and ideas to be enjoyed and coveted.

Wayne Hemmingway launched the festival and, as someone who has worked on commercial properties where his designs have been implemented, I’m a huge fan of his creative output. All week there are showcases of first class creative ideas from designers and I’d defy anyone to leave any of the events uninspired.

One display that I thoroughly enjoyed was Fuse Interiors collection of vintage and recycled furniture and interiors at Gallery Number One, which is running for the month of November. I know Danielle McInnes by reputation, having heard great things about her flair for sourcing pretty cool furniture that you won’t see replicated elsewhere. In the current world we live in, we see nonstop IKEA beige fit outs in both homes and shops/bars/offices and whilst I have no objection to this (after all, it’s been my bread and butter in the quiet times and I think it is good quality for the price) it really is refreshing to see a shop and website where you can buy a piece of furniture that really stands out and makes a statement. I’ve decided already that I want the coffee table with the London Underground Tube map and as soon as my son grows out of scribbling on everything with his crayons, it will be mine. Fuse have an eclectic range of pieces for home or office and I know Danielle has worked really hard on the launch of her shop earlier this year so I really wish her the best of luck and would encourage anyone who wants a change from the usual bland furniture pieces to check out what she has on offer at www.fuseinteriors.ie or pop along to the display at Gallery Number one and bag yourself a little something that will give your home or workplace that funky finish.

Looking forward to the rest of design week and it’s been great to see so much positivity and creativity at the events – well needed before November’s budget! Dear Mr Cowen and Lenihen…please don’t force us to the point where Argos flat pack furniture becoming all we can afford!

Noise reduction for your home

If you’ve decided that you want better noise reduction or sound control in your building or home, then acoustic flooring could be a very sensible option. However, before you decide on what kind is idea for your situation, here are 5 things you must consider.

1. What type of sound are you trying to reduce? There are several different types of noise that you may want to reduce and they fall into three categories. Airborne sound is produce by talking, the television or from music; impact sound comes from things banging against something, such as doors slamming, a vibrating washing machine or the drums; and flanking sound is when noise is transmitted through walls or floors despite not being loud.

2. Where do you want your new acoustic flooring to be installed? Once you know what type of sound you want to nullify, you’ll then know where in the property the acoustic flooring is required. For instance, maybe you want the basement or another room in the house to be converted into a place to play loud music. Or perhaps you want the dining room to be sound controlled, so you have more privacy.

3. Are you legally permitted to make the installation? Depending on whether you live in a new build or refurbishment, you may have to seek permission to install particular acoustic flooring. Some forms of sound control are for new builds, others for refurbs, and some for both. Either way, make sure you have permission.

4. Will you need to change your floorboards? There are many different solutions that could be a good fit for your project. For instance, you may want to change the floorboards to acoustic flooring – particularly if dealing with a new build. Alternatively, you may just want joint treatments to aid sound reduction. A third, less intrusive option would be to use overlay boards for your existing wooden or concrete flooring.

5. Will you be installing the flooring yourself or do you require the help of professionals? If you’re skilled when it comes to DIY jobs, you may decide to install the flooring yourself and save some of the cost involved. However, if you’re a novice when it comes to DIY and want to make sure it is fitted to a high finish, paying a little extra for a professional could be the best option.

So, if you’ve decided that you need acoustic flooring just ensure you take the above into account and you should be able to manage or outsource the project to get it finished exactly as you need!

Irish Web Awards 2010 – a great night

I had the pleasure of attending the Irish Web Awards last saturday night, at the mansion house in Dublin City Centre. The awards were hosted by the very witty and engaging Rick O Shea off 2fm and organised by Rick and Damien Mulley, the well respected blogger and digital communications expert. It was a truly fantastic night, and good to see so many small and independent websites publicly praised for their site.

The most heartwarming part of the evening was when Lisa Domican, a mother with an autistic child called Grace, won her award for the iPhone app that she developed when she realised that her daughter needed a communications tool when they were out of the house. Lisa has done an absolutely amazing job in developing and marketing this app, and it has made a huge difference to so many autistic children and their parents. She deserves every bit of recognition and applause and there wasnt a dry eye in the Mansion House when she gave a lovely speech upon acceptance of the award. Full details on the app and how all of us can help are here: http://graceappforautismoniphone.blogspot.com/

Architecture seminar – not just for us construction folk

There is what promises to be a fantastically interesting seminar in Dublin next week, Tuesday 26th October, at the council offices in Wood Quay. The topic is on 20th Century Architecture and its being organised by the Irish Architecture Foundation.  With speakers presenting case studies on such amazing buildings as the Sydney Opera House, I think it will be fascinating for any of you who, like me, genuinely appreciate how modern architecture can be just as enthralling as the old baroque, renaissance and georgian style buildings.

Its free to go along (we like free in these tough times!) and starts at 6pm, here is the link for further information:

New tapas bar in greystones!

We’re all very quick to publicly criticise bad service (and rightly so too) so I thought I’d give praise where praise is due, and write a complimentary note on the fabulous new tapas bar in greystones (my local town). Its called Mauzac and 6 of us went for dinner there last week. With so much doom and gloom around the ‘R’ word and very few businesses opening up, this was a brave move by the owner and its good to see some enterprise in Greystones.

The guy who runs it was very friendly and took the time to go over the specials, the wine list and gave us recommendations on dishes, as well as advising us on portion sizes – which was good as I’ve found that there’s no standard size for Tapas bars outside of Spain. The food was fantastic, particularly the calamari, and whilst the menu doesnt have a huge amount of dishes on it, the quality was excellent.

There was a very impressive wine list, and the prices were fair. A gorgeous tempranillo for the ladies at 19 euro a bottle and plenty of beers for us lads.

The atmosphere was buzzing and perfect for a Friday night, the place was spotless and overall we all thought it was a great night. The bill for 6 of us, including drinks, was 187 euro which we thought was so reasonable. We’ll definitely be going again and lets hope that this is the shape of things to come, with more businesses opening up in the locality.

Affordable housing on the Dublin Docklands

I read today that the DDDA (Dublin Docklands Development Authority) have released more properties under the Affordable Housing scheme. And there is a lovely development in St Margarets, North Dublin, that a friend of mine recently moved into under the ‘Rent To Buy’ program – whereby he rents for 2 years and at the end of that time, should he decide to buy, the rent he has paid is his deposit for the property.

This is absolutely excellent news, and a big relief to the many people who’s only hope of getting on the property ladder is with a scheme such as these. There isnt enough of this in Ireland, I was shocked when I moved here in 2007 at the lack of schemes like this, having been used to them in the UK. Its particularly hard for single people, people recently coming out of a relationship who need a new home,  or couples with a combined income that rules them out of living in an area that is feasible for their jobs, childcare arrangements or other circumstances.

Rent To Buy, Shared Ownership or Affordable Housing really do offer a lifeline to those who simply have no way of ever saving up a 50k deposit and securing a 400k plus mortgage. Lets hope we see plenty more of this so that people can own a nice home of their own, without the ridiculous mortgages that have been dished out like sweets in the past by Irish banks, only to leave so many citizens of this country with negative equity. A sensible way of purchasing property is the way forward – perhaps I am cynical in thinking that Banks will never push this as they make far too much money on the normal mortgages but lets hope the government and Local Authorities (with pressure from the public) ensure that these schemes expand to offer the growing population of Ireland the opportunity we deserve to own a home.

Weedle.com – an article from their blog about The Joinery Division and why social networking works

The nice folks at www.weedle.com have featured me this week on their blog. For those of you who havent heard, Weedle really is the next big thing in the dotcom world, especially for those of us who are independent professionals and rely on testimonials, word of mouth and need a facility to showcase our skills. Weedle only launched a few weeks ago and is still in the Beta stage but I personally feel that it is going to be a fantastic social network for people like myself. I’ve already made some great connections on it – people that can pass me work and in return I can do the same for them.

Here is the article and I cannot highly enough recommend people set up a profile on weedle – its free,  its certainly working for me so far and who doesn’t need to use every available tool in these turbulent times!

Hope to see you all on weedle soon!

me – a newly converted web enthusiast!

Greetings all – this is my first blog posting and hopefully there will be plenty more to follow. I’m a recent convert to the wonder that is the web – I can hear you all laughing as you manage your twitter/facebook/linkedIn and flickr accounts from your laptops and iPhones simultaneously! But having been a carpenter for the last 23 years, the web was never a tool that I felt would be of any use to me, till recently. My other half, who works within the digital sector (and will probably have plenty to say on this blog as she does in real life!) has just used my business for her case study when she recently completed a Diploma in Digital Marketing. As a result, my eyes have been opened to the opportunities that are there for tradesmen and independant business people to utilise the web or other digital channels to acquire new customers, communicate with both prospective and existing customers, and to build up a strong network online.

So converted I am – and now I have this lovely blog to accompany my recently set up Facebook Page, Twitter account and Weedle profile. I hope you enjoy it and I will endevour to keep it interesting, fresh and relevant.
